The 2025 Tata Altroz is the only premium hatchback in India that simultaneously holds a 5-star Bharat NCAP safety rating across petrol, diesel, and CNG powertrains, offers the segment's only diesel engine, and comes with a dual-clutch automatic that is smoother than anything a Baleno or Glanza buyer can get. It is also India's only CNG hatchback to earn a 5-star crash rating — that alone puts it in a category of one. Prices start at ₹6.30 lakh ex-showroom for the base Smart petrol and go up to ₹10.77 lakh for the fully-loaded Accomplished Plus S DCT petrol.
The 2025 facelift launched in May 2025 is not a badge-and-bumper job. Tata reworked the front fascia with new split LED headlights, a layered 3D grille, flush-fit illuminated door handles, and connected horizontal LED tail-lamps joined by a full-width light bar at the rear. Inside, the cabin mirrors the Curvv and Nexon family — dual 10.25-inch screens (instrument cluster plus infotainment), a 2-spoke steering wheel, Harman 8-speaker audio, and a voice-assisted electric sunroof on higher trims. The 345-litre boot is the largest in the segment, beating the i20's 311 litres and the Baleno's 318 litres.
Who is the Altroz for? If you are a family buyer who refuses to compromise on safety, a CNG commuter who wants premium features without losing boot space (Altroz iCNG still gives you 210 litres), or someone who drives long highways and wants the diesel torque advantage no rival offers, the Altroz deserves a serious look. The facelift's AMT option — available now on both petrol and CNG variants — also makes it genuinely practical for city traffic, closing the one gap buyers always pointed to.

Running Cost Reality Check (CNG vs Petrol): Assume 60 km/day, Delhi CNG at ₹75/kg, petrol at ₹95/litre. The Creative S CNG at 22 km/kg costs approximately ₹205/day in CNG. The equivalent petrol manual at 15 kmpl costs approximately ₹380/day. That is a saving of ₹175/day → ₹5,250/month → ₹63,000/year. The price premium of the CNG variant over an equivalent petrol variant is roughly ₹70,000–80,000. Payback period: under 15 months for a 60 km/day commuter. After that, you are ahead every single month.

Tata Altroz Pros
- India's only premium hatchback with a 5-star Bharat NCAP rating across petrol, diesel, and CNG powertrains — the Baleno trails at 4 stars, and the i20 and Glanza haven't been tested at all. If safety is your priority, no hatchback comes close.
- The only diesel hatchback in India. The 1.5L Revotorq delivers 200Nm from just 1,750 rpm — that's torque you can feel at city speeds and on highway overtakes. Baleno, i20, and Glanza offer no diesel at all. If you drive 1,500+ km per month, the diesel pays for its premium inside 18 months.
- Largest boot in the segment at 345 litres — 27 litres more than the Baleno and 34 litres more than the i20. Even the iCNG variant retains a practical 210 litres, which is usable unlike most CNG rivals that leave you with almost nothing.
- 6 airbags standard across all variants, including the base Smart at ₹6.30 lakh. The Baleno offers 2 airbags in its base spec. Tata's safety philosophy starts at the bottom of the range, not just at the top.
- The 6-speed DCT is the smoothest automatic in this segment — it is noticeably more refined than the AMT offered by Baleno and Glanza. The CarWale real-world test clocked 10.45 kmpl city efficiency, which is acceptable for a DCT in stop-go traffic.
- Twin-cylinder iCNG system maintains boot usability — 210 litres vs the near-unusable boots of single-cylinder CNG setups. The system also allows direct start in CNG mode and auto-switches to petrol if CNG runs low.
- Dual 10.25-inch screens (infotainment + digital cluster) from Creative S upward — wireless CarPlay and Android Auto, navigation integrated in the cluster, and blind-spot display built into the instrument panel. This is Curvv-level cabin tech in a hatchback.
- Flush-fit illuminated door handles on all variants — a detail you find on cars costing twice as much. No rival in this segment offers this across the range.
- Voice-assisted electric sunroof from Pure S upward — opening the sunroof with a voice command is genuinely useful when your hands are full. Rivals either omit the sunroof (Baleno, Glanza) or offer a basic manual tilt (some i20 variants).
- AMT now available on both petrol and CNG variants — the CNG AMT is an India-first in this segment, making the Altroz the only car that gives you CNG economy without a clutch pedal. This was the one gap in the lineup and it has been closed.
Tata Altroz Cons
- Petrol engine is noticeably rough and noisy at high revs — the 1.2L Revotron is a 3-cylinder unit and the vibrations are felt more than in rivals like the Baleno's 4-cylinder. Below 3,500 rpm it is fine, but push it and the character changes for the worse. If you are regularly merging onto expressways or doing spirited driving, this will bother you.
- No diesel automatic option — a real gap for highway buyers. The diesel is manual-only, which means the high-torque, high-efficiency engine has no automatic option at all. Hyundai i20 has a DCT with its turbo-petrol for those who want auto convenience with performance.
- Wheelbase is shorter than the i20 (2,501mm vs 2,580mm) — in practice this means slightly less rear legroom compared to the i20. Tall passengers or families who regularly carry adults in the back will notice this on longer journeys.
- No heads-up display — both the Baleno and Glanza offer a HUD that the Altroz skips entirely. If you rely on this feature for navigation at a glance, the Altroz cannot offer it regardless of how much you spend.
- No 60:40 split rear seat — when you need to carry both passengers and luggage, the Altroz forces a choice. The Baleno and Glanza both offer 60:40 split folding, which makes loading longer items considerably more practical.
- Tata's after-sales service experience is inconsistent outside major cities. Owners in Tier 2 and Tier 3 towns frequently report longer wait times for parts compared to the Maruti and Hyundai networks. This is improving but is not yet at Maruti's level of reach.
Should You Buy the Tata Altroz?
Buy the Creative S Petrol Manual at ₹8.37 lakh if you want the sweet spot of the range. It is the first variant to unlock the 10.25-inch dual-screen setup, the 360° camera, wireless CarPlay, the sunroof, and wireless charging — everything that makes the 2025 facelift feel genuinely premium. Below this, you are in good safety territory but missing the features that separate the Altroz from a basic hatchback. If you want the AMT with this feature set, step up to the Creative S AMT at ₹8.92 lakh — an ₹55,000 premium for clutch-free city driving that is entirely reasonable. For high-mileage city commuters, choose the Creative S CNG Manual at ₹9.15 lakh — you get the same premium feature set with CNG running costs that pay back the variant premium in under 15 months at 60 km/day.
Consider the Accomplished S Diesel at ₹10.27 lakh if you clock more than 1,500 km per month and do at least 40% on highways. The 1.5L diesel returns 17–19 kmpl in real city conditions and 22–26 kmpl on highways. No rival in this segment offers a diesel — this is the Altroz's most unique proposition and buyers who need it will find no alternative. Skip this variant if your monthly run is under 1,000 km; the diesel premium never pays back below that usage level.
Skip the Altroz and buy the Hyundai i20 if you need the best rear passenger space, the most automatic transmission options in a single car (iMT, DCT, CVT), or if you drive primarily on highways where the i20's longer wheelbase and more refined ride quality become noticeable advantages. The i20 also wins on brand image for some buyers who prefer the Korean interior execution. It lacks diesel and CNG options, but its turbocharged petrol is more exciting than the Altroz's naturally aspirated unit. Budget around ₹9–11 lakh for a well-equipped i20 automatic.
Skip the Altroz entirely if your top priority is service network reach in smaller towns and the absolute lowest ownership cost. The Maruti Suzuki Baleno has the widest service network in India and parts are cheaper and more readily available in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. If you drive under 800 km per month and a workshop visit every 10,000 km is a major inconvenience, the Baleno's reliability track record and service ubiquity matter more than the Altroz's superior safety rating and feature list.
All prices mentioned are ex-showroom across India and are subject to change. On-road prices vary by city, RTO rates, and insurance premiums at the time of purchase. Verify current prices with your nearest Tata Motors dealer before making a purchase decision.
